Last Friday I met my friends Lynn (the West one), Feresdei Azad plus Caroline Johnson at the opening of the show, Chicago Disability Activism, Arts, and Design
Okay I admit it. U2 used to be a terrific band.
I originally was going to write this blog last year but I got busy and almost died (the usual.) Anyway I have never been an aficionado of what they call prog rock. I always thought it was rather, smug and showoffy and it lacks the element of fun.
This year is the 100 anniversary of Jack Kirby’s death.
(May 2017? and August 25, 2017) This is a mostly comprised of an old blog that I wrote in August and never published. **I recently had lunch with a fellow prof, and she told me an interesting story that could not have happened 20 years ago. She said her son went through a rough year … [Read more…]
One of my all-time favorite TV shows was the I Claudius miniseries which was aired on BBC/ Masterpiece Theatre/ Channel 11 back when it was the best channel in Chicago.
I recently took part in a vitamin study, and I got paid quite a bit of money (well for me anyway). Since I lost most of my summer work it was a godsend to get paid for taking vitamins. On the way back I stopped at an interesting memorabilia shop since it was not too far out of the way. But first a bit of background
What comes to mind when you hear the word cannibalism?
Something occurred to me as I was writing my recent blog that compared Thor, King Arthur, Hercules, and Jesus.
I have been watching the cable series Camelot, and I got through the last episode of the first and last season (I recommend it with some reservations). As I was watching the show, I noticed many parallels between the stories of Arthur, Jesus and many gods plus other iconic heroes (especially Thor and Hercules) from … [Read more…]
About a year a half ago, Marvel announced that they were doing a new series featuring a female vampire slayer who was the daughter of Blade. I have always been a big horror comics fan, and it was one of the only new marvel series that I was truly looking forward to (other than Howard … [Read more…]
I just saw Morrissey on Saturday in Douglass Park. Morrissey is an extremely controversial but highly respected music figure. He has always been a hugely popular figure in his native England, and he also has a very devoted if small cult in the USA. As a member of the Smiths he was often dubbed the … [Read more…]
It all started when I saw a post from a Facebook friend who was a poet/teacher. I did not know her well. She lived in a different state and we never met. She was a friend of a friend, and it seemed like we had some stuff in common so I friended her. Well, enough … [Read more…]
I no longer live in Chicago (I’m far from most of what I call civilization) so when I go to there I usually like to do several things or go to events that are close to each other in one evening. This particular night I went to Gallery Cabaret, Odd Obsession video. and The Exit. … [Read more…]
I’ve been re-exploring some of Kevin Smith’s work (the director/screenplay writer/comics author) and I have come to the conclusion that he started out very strong (perhaps at his peak) then he did some good stuff in his middle period, but recently he has lost most of his cinematic and writing mojo. Except for Mallrats, Smith was terrific … [Read more…]
I am proud to start a new section on my irregularly posted blog titled asshole of the week (because I couldn’t use naughty words on my previous blog which had a name that was similar to the watcher). I was going to give the award to the principal who suspended a student for giving a … [Read more…]
I recently read William Shatner’s book, My Fifty Year Old Friendship with a Remarkable Man about (surprise) his relationship with his Star Trek co-star and ex friend Leonard Nimoy. Although Shatner underemphasized their split and its importance, the two men ceased to be friends when Shatner allegedly used footage he took of Nimoy in a … [Read more…]
I was at my brother’s house and I have a very primitive recorder that I have been having problems with so I decided to try to use my phone to record a conversation. I asked my nephew a few questions about his food choices and some other issues to kill the time. For the record … [Read more…]
Have you been following the recent debate about Asian representation in comic and graphic novel films? Recently it was announced that a live action version of Ghost in the Shell is coming out. The comic series was of course completely populated by Asians including the main character. However, it was also announced that the film … [Read more…]
